The Argonauts
There are four bands that share the same name.
The Argonauts formed in London, UK in 2003 by Daniel Fell (vocals, acoustic guitar), Pete Martin (bass, backing vocals) and Matt Hamilton (guitar) and Terry Swain (vocals, drums). They recorded the independent Telling Stories EP in the summer of 2004, which was championed by John Peel and XFM's Claire Sturgess.
The band played many shows acoustically due to Terry being unavailable before welcoming Ben Handysides into the fold. Pete then left to concentrate on his band My Echo which resulted in Liz Stott (trumpet, keyboards, vocals) and James Eaton (guitar, vocals) joining, with Fell switching to bass. The band continued to play live, traveling the country in a cramped car and gaining a reputation for shambolic but endearing shows.
Liz then left the band to concentrate on her artwork. This spawned the most recognised line-up of The Argonauts, and soon after the band attracted the attention of Russell Sheffield and Henry Robinson who formed operando Artists to look after and substantially invest the band.
In early 2007 the band started to work on Sixes and Sevens with producer Jon Clayton at his OneCat Studio, Brixton. Upon finishing the recording, Russell Sheffield enlisted Malcolm Toft (The Beatles, Supertramp) to mix and produce Sixes and Sevens. The Argonauts and Clayton decamped to Devon and Sixes and Sevens was released in November 2007 through operando. In 2008 the band had started to gain some interest from major labels and played a few larger festivals. In late 2008 the existing management agreement was due for renewal and the management insisted a renewed contract be put in place before further financial or management support. No agreement was reached and they parted company. With no label or management support, the band folded around the end of 2009.
Daniel Fell went on to form the much love but short lived band The Bon Vivants with Special Needs frontman Zachery Stephenson.
Daniel Fell now performs solo, sometimes aided by Terry Swain on drums.
